Power Players Spotlight: Meet Chris HayesWhat is your approach to helping clients meet their renewable energy goals?
“At my core, I am a connector. While my primary work is in the government sector, collaborating with government-owned labs and military projects, there’s a growing shift toward renewable energy. My approach is to bridge the gap between these institutions and the expertise KWRE offers.”
What is your favorite source of renewable energy and why?
“Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Energy storage is a game-changer because it addresses one of the biggest challenges in renewable energy: grid stability. By integrating BESS, we can reduce fluctuations, increase efficiency, and create a more reliable energy infrastructure. It’s not just a supporting technology—it’s a critical enabler of the clean energy transition.”
What project is your favorite and why?
“A significant portion of my work involves Sandia National Laboratories. While much of this work is confidential, I can say that the cutting-edge research and technological advancements being developed there have enormous potential for the future of renewable energy. It’s exciting to support projects that are not only pushing the limits of today’s energy solutions but also laying the groundwork for the next generation of innovations.”
What’s your favorite solution to a challenge you’ve faced?
“Collaboration is key in solving complex engineering challenges, and one of my favorite experiences was working with our Head of Electrical Engineering, Priyantha Sirisooriya, back when he was with SunPower. We tackled a highly integrated project that required deep coordination between disciplines, and through that process, we built a synergy that has carried over into our work together at KWRE.”
Why are you passionate about renewable energy?
“The future is being built today, and every project we design must take that into account. Our world is shifting toward sustainable solutions, and the decisions we make now will define the energy landscape for generations to come.”
Outside of KWRE, what are your favorite hobbies?
“Faith and learning are central to my life. I spend time preparing for ministry and teaching, which keeps me engaged and growing. I love spending time with my family and getting outside for walks—living in Tennessee means I’m often joined by deer and squirrels along the way!”
What are you currently reading?
“Right now, I’m exploring works that focus on faith, leadership, and personal growth.”
What’s been your favorite moment at KWRE?
“One of my standout moments was during a trip to California when I made a stop in New Mexico for a project site visit. After the visit, I had the opportunity to grab lunch with Chuck McCallum and Bill Swanson. Since KWRE operates across multiple locations nationwide, moments like these—where we come together in person—are invaluable. And as a bonus, after lunch, I saw a skunk in real life for the first time while walking in the parking lot—definitely a moment to remember!”
